DiVarsity All Stars 2017 - The Houston County High School Soccer Program was represented well, once again, at the annual Georgia High School DiVarsity All Star Games. Sprayberry High School, in Marietta GA, hosted four matches on 20 May 2017. Georgia Bostic and Val'Dazia Todd teamed up on the girl's Blue Team for an impressive 4-0 victory over the White Team. For the boys, Declan Furlough, Heath Henry, Hunter Henry, and Austin Marfell were on Blue as well but unfortunately fell to the White 0-2. Furlough had a clean sheet for practically the entire first half until a well placed long shot from White found the upper drawer. Our three offensive stars, Henry x2 and Marfell combined and possessed well with several decent shots on goal, but the White defense found a way to hold them scoreless. Heath Henry was awarded match MVP for the Blue Team and also received his Student-Athlete of the Year 6A award. Bear Down!  HoCo Head Coach, Stephen Edwards, was unable to make the trip due to illness.

GHSA PLAYOFFS ROUND 1 WRAP UP

5/1/2017

Round 1 of the 2017 GHSA State Playoffs is in the books. The Lady Bears complete their season with a 2-1 Loss to Greenbrier HS and the Bears defeated Evans with a score of 10-1.

In the girls match it was a close game all the way with possession clearly on the Lady Bears side but the Wolfpack was successful in stopping numerous attempts by the home team in it's attacking third. Greenbrier scored first and HoCo's Deja Wilson found the back of the net on an equalizer that was a Division 1 level shot from far outside. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears allowed a late goal with three minutes remaining that ended the season. The ladies finished 9-8-1 (includes scrimmage) and #2 in the Region. The future for this team is bright with a strong group on the rise. As for the seniors, they made history while playing for Houston County, earning its firs Region Title in 2016 for the girls. Overall a good showing in the new Region 1-AAAAAA.

For the men, their first game in the State tournament was a very impressive display of speed and precision. The game was over early as the Bears netted 9 goals in the first half coming off a combination of plays and players. Seven different players, including two determined defenders (Freeman, Martin), found pay-dirt in the match. Head Coach, Stephen Edwards, was pleased with the teams performance but understands the level of competition will rise dramatically after this game. Next game for the Bears will be against the 7-AAAAAA #2 Seed, Centennial (15-4-0) on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:30pm, at Freedom Field.

BEARS WIN 11th REGION TITLE

Unlike the first match between the Bears and the Northside Eagles, which ended 6-0, Friday nights Region Finals came down to one goal and 80 minutes of stellar defense. In the 11th minute, a perfectly executed buildup and finish was all that was needed to secure a win. Hunter Henry combined with his brother Heath in the midfield who slotted a perfect ball to Freshman Austin Marfell,s run. Moving from right to left, Marfell hit a perfect shot with his left foot into the left upper 90 past extended Northside Keeper, Colin Thomas, who blocked every other shot (and there were plenty) but this loan goal. From that point, HoCo's stellar defensive play took over the game and denied numerous attacks from the Eagles. Keeper Declan Furlough appeared bored at times, but made an outstanding "punch-out" play near the 18 yard box line that stopped a potential Northside goal, in the first half. The last 10 minutes were tense and a bit hectic for the Bears defense. Northside's #10, Alex Gelter gave his Eagles an opportunity to tie the match late in the game with a perfectly placed free kick that found the head of his teammate inside the 18 yard box. But, the header went wide and the Bears closed out the game with possession and alert play. Coach Stephen Edwards, in his first year at the helm, was elated (relieved) after the game as were his players who decided the remaining Gatorade in the cooler was better served over Coach's head!  The victory places the Bears as #1 Seed for Region 1 in the State Playoffs and marks their 11th Region TItle since 2003.

The Macon Telegraph visits Freedom Field and meets Coach Stephen Edwards and the 2017 Bears soccer team. The season following the departure of coach Jason Kirk and some questions have been answered.  As the team cracks the state overall top ten list this week, the team finds itself in familiar territory. It's like we have said all along, "It's Bear's Business as Usual".

The Bears are thirsty for another victory in their last Region matchups as they hit the road this Friday. Our Lady's are poised to secure the second spot in Region 1-AAAAAA if they can pull off the victory and an eventual rematch in Leesburgh for the Region Championship match. The Men have secured home field advantage for the Region Final, with the win over Northside, but look to stay on a winning run at Coffee. Game times are 5:00pm for the Lady Bears and 7:00pm for the Bears.  We will see you at the "Coffee Cup"!  Address is: 159 Trojan Way, Douglas, GA 31533
