Round 1 of the 2017 GHSA State Playoffs is in the books. The Lady Bears complete their season with a 2-1 Loss to Greenbrier HS and the Bears defeated Evans with a score of 10-1.
In the girls match it was a close game all the way with possession clearly on the Lady Bears side but the Wolfpack was successful in stopping numerous attempts by the home team in it's attacking third. Greenbrier scored first and HoCo's Deja Wilson found the back of the net on an equalizer that was a Division 1 level shot from far outside. Unfortunately, the Lady Bears allowed a late goal with three minutes remaining that ended the season. The ladies finished 9-8-1 (includes scrimmage) and #2 in the Region. The future for this team is bright with a strong group on the rise. As for the seniors, they made history while playing for Houston County, earning its firs Region Title in 2016 for the girls. Overall a good showing in the new Region 1-AAAAAA.
For the men, their first game in the State tournament was a very impressive display of speed and precision. The game was over early as the Bears netted 9 goals in the first half coming off a combination of plays and players. Seven different players, including two determined defenders (Freeman, Martin), found pay-dirt in the match. Head Coach, Stephen Edwards, was pleased with the teams performance but understands the level of competition will rise dramatically after this game. Next game for the Bears will be against the 7-AAAAAA #2 Seed, Centennial (15-4-0) on Wednesday, May 3rd at 7:30pm, at Freedom Field.
